When providing instruction for students, pre-assess students’ abilities before playing the game. The XMG Playbook© explains how to use the Scouting Reports to ability group the students. The games are best played when students play against someone at about their level of mathematical skill, but the Playbook includes tips on letting students of differing abilities play against each other.

The Playbook also include suggestions for playing as a family at home with players of different abilities, such as kids who are faster than their parents when multiplying fractions.
